“And The Myna Bird Speaks” is a bilingual R&D theatre project that weaves a poignant Bengali folk tale with the visceral reality of the 2013 Rana Plaza disaster in Bangladesh, where over a thousand garment workers died. Developed in collaboration with award-winning author Shahaduz Zaman and the Mukul and Ghetto Tigers Theatre Company, the piece exposes the systemic corruption that fuelled the tragedy. Although rooted in a specific South Asian event, the story’s core themes have universal appeal.
“And The Myna Bird Speaks,” fuses a Bengali folk tale with the visceral reality of the 2013 Rana Plaza tragedy in Bangladesh, which sparked global outrage after killing over a thousand garment workers. It revives the Bengali Bhandi Jatra tradition (hidden narrator, voice/sound only) to explore multi-layered corruption.
Traditional puthi paath and puppetry will be an integral part of the performance. Audience imagination confronts the core question: Who profits, who pays, who looks away?
